The Working Of An Offset Printer

Printing service is used by most businesses for varied reasons such as marketing and corporate communications. Hence it is helpful to learn about the basic working of the frequently used printing process called offset printing.

Offset printing is so popular among printing service providers and clients because for large quantities, it is more economical than other options. This is the reason good printing service providers suggest the use of offset printing for large volume of prints.

The ink used during offset printing has oil as the medium and does not dissolve in water. Its name comes from the fact that in this method, images are not transported directly from the plates to the paper but this is done using rubber blankets as a medium.

The process begins by developing the designs. Film negatives were employed in the past for making images and then copying them to aluminum based printing plates. But, a modern printing company would now develop the plates directly by using an image setting system. This plate is then put on a cylinder with the correct side up. Thereafter water, and then ink, is spread on the image plates. The image gets the ink while the rest of the area gets a thin cover of water, which makes sure that the ink does not spill outside the images.

After being painted with the ink, the image is kept on a rubber blanket which is on a different cylinder, leading the image to be reversed. Afterwards, sheets of paper of desired dimensions are put together and the rubber blankets transmit the image to the sheets on a third cylinder, where it comes out as the right side.

The job of printing is completed by the printing company by consolidating the printed sheets using staples or glue or in any other way as per the needs of the client.
