Twitter Your Design Thoughts

By Myer Thompson

Remember when decorating your apartment meant throwing up a few posters and calling it a day. Not so anymore. Welcome to the dawning of the age of Aquarius. The new, hip lad or lass must construct a living space so impressive, so inspired that it merits a Tweet or Facebook update. To live is not enough anymore, now you must live to be looked at.

When you ducked behind your front door, you were safe from prying eyes. But, that was before your life was a reality show broadcast to a cast of people you get confirm via social media platforms. You're a star now, if only to your group of 100 or so followers.

Post your new couch on Twitter and get some feed back. Does it make you look too fat? Is it just right? Would Humphrey Bogart approve of it? Tag it on Facebook, ping it through the blogosphere through any one of your five or six blogs. Hey, don't you have a blog dedicated just to design? There you have it.

Now you can demand feedback immediately. Moreover, you've come to expect it. Which lamp works best in the far corner? Is the Tiffany lamp OK or should you upgrade to an Alessi? What about a throw? Cashmere? Of course. Which shade of crimson? Vermilion? Perfect.

The brave new world is here and it's playing out. You can bring the entire design database for the past 100 years to bear at the touch of a button. With a simple Google search you can avail yourself of any number of design theories, practicums, and accessories. And then, you can ask all your friends and followers if they groove on the velvet Louis XIV in near the bay window.
